Welcome to Brooklyn Center, MN
Brooklyn Center, MN is a diverse suburban city in Hennepin County that features a convenient location, growing local economy, and a tight-knit community. With a population of around 30,000 residents, Brooklyn Center may seem small, but it’s close to the center of everything as it’s located right between Brooklyn Park and Minneapolis, while the Mississippi River lies to the east.
Not only are commuters attracted to the convenient location, businesses are staking their own areas. Both Surly Brewing Company and Caribou Coffee are based here as well as Medtronic Energy and Component Center which employs around 1,200 people.
The History of Brooklyn Center
Like much of the area, Brooklyn Center was originally part of the Missouri Territory. When European settlers moved into the area in 1852, Brooklyn Township was formed. However, as the area grew in population, the Township split and formed different, independent villages. Brooklyn Center chose that name as they were the center of local trade in the township and offered several market gardens that supplied Minneapolis with fresh produce.
While Brooklyn Center was a small village for the first half of its history, it’s population grew exponentially following World War II. While the 1940 census only counted around 1,800 residents, by 1960, the population numbered around 25,000. In 1966, it was was incorporated as it’s own independent city.
For people looking at Brooklyn Center real estate, you’ll see that the growth influenced the architecture of the area. Many of the homes were built in the late 1940s and 1950s, thus ramblers and split-level homes with mid-century modern details are common. Townhomes are also plentiful, too.
