Minnetonka is located in Hennepin County, a thriving community of around 55,000 residents, including those living in Minnetonka Beach. The names for the two communities comes from the Dakota Native Americans’ words mni tanka, which means “great water.”
In fact, the land was initially settled by the Dakota and Ojibway Native Americans in part because of its proximity to Lake Minnetonka.
By the 1800s, Europeans were exploring the land and by 1851, the Dakota had sold the land to the United States with the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux.
Over the years, the Minntonka and Minnetonka Beach area has been home to many industries, including farming and, later, industrialization.
Today, several major companies are headquartered in the area, including Cargill, Carlson Companies, AmeriPride Services and United Healthcare.
