Ice Dams ~ A Refresher

Many homeowners in Minnesota are all too familiar with ice dams.   This is the ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents proper drainage of melting snow.  The resulting water can back up behind the dam and cause extensive damage to a home by leaking into the walls, ceilings and insulation.  This can also result in mold and mildew within the home.  Ice dams occur due to temperature fluctuations above and below the roof line over an extended period of time.  The following has been prepared by one of our Community Resources, Rayco Construction located in the Twin Cities.

Ice Dams: What You Need to Know

Ice Dam Causes:

1.)   A lack of insulation in your attic space, also a contributing factor to heat loss

2.)   Lack of ventilation  in your attic space, resulting in minimal of air flow

3.)   Plugged or frozen downspouts

4.)   Radical temperature fluctuations

5.)   Snow Pack, also referred to as the amount of snow on your roof

A large amount of snow on your roof will actually act as an insulator. This traps heat between the shingles and the snow pack. When the moisture from the snow pack hits the overhang (soffit area), it turns into ice. The ice dam will continue to grow until it reaches the heat wall. This is when the roof can begin leaking as the moisture has no choice but to back up, causing ice dams.

Ice Dam Removal Options:

1.)   Have your roof and attic space inspected to make sure there is enough insulation and proper air flow.

2.)   Install a heat cable system to ensure that moisture always has a place to escape. This is especially important if you have gutters and downspouts. Even though a downspout may be free of ice, the outlets can freeze leaving the water with no place to escape.

3.)   Roof Steaming is another option for ice removal. Steaming allows for gentle pressure of hot steam to cut through the ice on your roof; making it less susceptible to damage.

4.)   Rake the snow off the roof about 5 to 10 ft. beyond the heat wall and install ice melt.

Overall, there are multiple factors as to why your roof may be more vulnerable to ice dams. It is important to consult professionals to figure out the best solution for your particular structural needs. Furthermore, it is important to be pro-active, figure out underlying issues, and stay ahead of the problem.
