ECCO Neighborhood Guide for Minneapolis Residents
ECCO, or East Calhoun Community Organization, is an esteemed residential neighborhood located in Uptown Minneapolis, MN. Nestled between W. 31st and W. 36th street, this lakeside neighborhood offers convenient access to downtown Minneapolis and I-94 via Hennepin Avenue.
Due to its proximity to Bde Maka Ska, this small community is known for great outdoor recreational activities, while still holding onto the Uptown spirit of trendy restaurants, a thriving art scene, and a neighborly spirit. Due to its popularity, ECCO is an sought-after neighborhood that residents love, with only a few homes hitting the market each year.
The History of ECCO
ECCO was first established in the early 1900s as a Minneapolis suburb that developed along the streetcar route. In 1911 Bde Maka Ska was connected to Lake Isles by a canal and that was the year the first boathouse was built on the lake shore. This led to a boom of development, and to this day, the majority of homes and duplexes still in the neighborhood date back to the early 20th century.
Present Day ECCO
ECCO is an upscale community that is mainly residential. Featuring lovely, restored homes and quiet streets, it’s only a few blocks to the hottest spots in Uptown or to the beautiful Bde Maka Ska.
ECCO Amenities
If you love the outdoors, you’ll never be bored living in ECCO. Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet are both popular destinations with walking and biking paths, plus boating. In the summer, the Bandshell features free live concerts, and during the winter, residents can try ice boating and snowshoeing.
While the neighborhood itself is primarily residential, there are lovely markets just a few blocks from the center of ECCO, including Lunds & Byerlys. Or, if you don’t feel like cooking, visit the multiple Lake Street restaurants like Amore Uptown or Morrissey’s Irish Pub.
Around Bde Maka Ska, there are many educational opportunities including the Bakken Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Museum of Russian Art and much more!
