History of Kingfield
In 1885, Minneapolis’s border stopped at 38th Street, but as it expanded in 1887 to 54th Street, what was once farm land became neighborhoods. One of these neighborhoods was named Kingfield after “Colonel” William S. King, who was not in the military and was called Colonel as a nickname but was a postmaster of the U.S. House of Representatives and later a one-term U.S. Representative. His land was annexed to Minneapolis, and thus, the neighborhood was named for him. Later, a spacious park was named after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Once established as part of the city, the neighborhood grew quickly between 1900 and 1920. In fact, three-fourths of the single-family homes in Kingfield were built before 1920. This is prevalent in the architecture and home design, as many of the houses feature Art Deco, Arts & Crafts, and Craftsman details.
