Located in Hennepin County just to the west of Minneapolis, St. Louis Park is bordered by Golden Valley to the North, Minnetonka to the West, and Edina to the South.
With a population of only 45,000, St. Louis Park is large enough to offer in-town conveniences and amenities, but main thoroughfares, including I-394, State Route 7, State Route 100, and Excelsior Boulevard make downtown Minneapolis and the trendy Uptown neighborhood just a short drive away.
St. Louis Park History
Originally known as Elmwood, St. Louis Park became it’s own incorporated city and changed it’s name in 1886 after the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway that ran through the area. Once it became incorporated, industry developed rapidly through the late 1800s, and plateaued for several decades.
However, St. Louis Park experienced two massive times of growth. The first between 1920 to 1930 when the population went from just over 2,000 to almost 5,000 residents, but the Depression caused the building boom to stop rapidly.
After World War II, St. Louis experienced another boom, and between 1940 to 1955, the population soared from 7,700 to around 40,000 people. At one point, it was estimated that seven people a day were moving to St. Louis Park. During this time, 66 subdivisions were developed to allow for around 3,000 homes.
Today, the evidence of these two periods of growth shows in the architecture. Neighborhoods that developed during the 1920s feature lovely arts and crafts styling or Tudor architecture, while the population growth of the 1940s and 1950s led to a prevalence of mid-century modern homes throughout many neighborhoods in the town.
