A Brief History of Whittier
During the 1800s, the Mdewakanton Dakota indigenous tribes occupied the area from Saint Anthony Falls toward the Minnesota River.
In old photographs, temporary Dakota camps can be seen in the Whittier area.
European settlers began to regularly inhabit the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This includes such notable individuals as Charles S. Pillsbury as well as John T. Blaisdell.
After the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, Blaisdell ended up developing the area south of Downtown Minneapolis into Blaisdell’s Addition.
