Highland Park & Macalester-Groveland Communities Of St. Paul
Highland Park and Macalester-Groveland are two neighborhoods in southwest St. Paul, Minnesota. Highland Park, which is sometimes referred to as Highland District Council (District 15), is situated along the Mississippi River. As of 2000, its population was about 23,200.
A History of Growth
William Finn first settled the Minnesota community in 1848.
Highland Park experienced tremendous growth in the 1920s after the Ford Motor Company opened the Twin Cities Assembly Plant there.
A bridge connecting Minneapolis and Highland Park further helped the area grow by drawing more workers to the area.
The neighborhoods experienced another population boom after World War II when several new homes were built in the area as well as the Highland Village Shopping Center expansion and the Sibley Plaza Shopping Center.
Spotlight On The Macalester-Groveland Neighborhood in St. Paul, MN
The Macalester-Groveland community developed around the same time as Highland Park.
The community arose out of several major developments in the area, including the Short Line Railroad and Macalester College.
By 1930, the community of Macalester-Groveland was well established as a fine St. Paul area neighborhood.
